Fixing the Attic Floor

Attic air sealing and blown-in insulation is the lower-cost way to cut attic heat, and it is the right choice for many West Palm Beach homes, especially those with the air handler in a closet and short duct runs. The vented attic stays as it is, but the ceiling below it gets sealed and buried under a deep, even layer of cellulose or fiberglass.

Leaks that matter

  • Light fixtures, bath fans and ceiling fan boxes.
  • Plumbing vents and wiring holes in the top plates.
  • The attic access hatch or pull-down stairs.
  • Duct boots where supply registers meet the drywall.
  • Gaps around the air handler platform and return.
  • Soffit-to-ceiling transitions over additions and porches.

HomeGuide lists air sealing at $350 to $3,000. In a humid climate, those leaks bring moisture as well as heat.

Getting the depth right

The 2023 Florida energy code lists R-38 for ceilings in Zone 2, which includes Palm Beach County, and ENERGY STAR recommends R-49 in an uninsulated Zone 2 attic or R-38 where three to four inches already sit. Many older attics here hold a few inches of settled material. We measure in several spots, since insulation is usually thin at the eaves and around the access. HomeGuide's attic guide lists blown-in at $0.90 to $2.40 per square foot.

FPL rebate

FPL lists an instant $220 ceiling insulation rebate when existing insulation is below R-8 and an FPL-approved participating contractor does the work. If your attic has very little insulation, check eligibility with FPL before the job.

Cellulose or fiberglass

Both work well. Cellulose is denser and slows air a bit more; fiberglass is lighter and does not absorb water. Fixr lists blown fiberglass at $1.65 to $2.60 per square foot and cellulose at $1.75 to $3.80. The quote names the product and the depth needed for its R-value, and we leave rulers so you can check later.

Attic Air Sealing & Blown-In Insulation Questions

How much insulation should my attic have in Palm Beach County?

Florida's code lists R-38 for Zone 2 ceilings; ENERGY STAR recommends R-49 starting from an uninsulated attic.

Is blown-in worth it if my air handler is in the attic?

It still helps, and costs less than roof deck foam. If the ducts are long and leaky, a sealed attic may help more.

Can you add insulation over what's there?

Yes, if it is dry and clean.

Do I qualify for FPL's rebate?

FPL's program requires existing insulation below R-8 and an FPL-approved contractor. Check with FPL.
