Insulating Walls While They Are Open
Wall insulation for remodels and additions makes the most of the rare times walls are open. In the Palm Beaches that happens during kitchen and bath remodels, additions and enclosed porches, garage conversions, and repairs after storm damage or water intrusion. Once the drywall is off, every cavity can be sealed and insulated with spray foam, which is far more effective than refitting batts.
Frame walls
Open-cell foam fills a 2x4 or 2x6 cavity and seals around outlets, wiring and plumbing. Closed-cell gets more R-value into each inch and adds stiffness. The 2023 Florida energy code lists R-13 for wood-frame walls in Zone 2; a 2x4 cavity of open-cell or an inch and a half or so of closed-cell gets there. Fixr lists new construction spray foam at $2.75 to $6.50 per square foot and existing walls at $3.15 to $7.50.
Concrete block walls
Most Palm Beach County houses have concrete block exterior walls, usually finished inside with furring strips and drywall. The 2023 Florida code lists R-6, or R-4 continuous, for mass walls in Zone 2. When the drywall comes off during a remodel, the shallow furring space can take closed-cell foam, which bonds to the block, seals the gaps and adds R-value without thickening the wall much.
Additions and conversions
Where new framing meets the original house, the joint is a common weak spot: a new roof tied into an old one, a porch enclosed with a floor that sits over a slab, a garage converted to living space. We pay attention to those seams. Enclosed porches and converted garages often need the ceiling and walls insulated, plus the slab edge considered.
Storm and water damage
After a storm or a leak, wet insulation behind drywall has to come out. When walls are opened for repairs, it is the right time to spray foam and seal the cavities rather than putting back batts.

Wall Insulation for Remodels & Additions Questions
Can you spray foam inside existing closed walls?
Standard spray foam needs open cavities. For closed walls, injection foam or dense-pack are options, but in block homes the options are limited.
How do you insulate concrete block walls?
When drywall is off, closed-cell foam in the furring space bonds to the block and adds R-value.
What R-value do walls need in Palm Beach County?
Florida's 2023 code lists R-13 for frame walls and R-6 or R-4 continuous for mass walls in Zone 2.
Do you work with remodel contractors?
Yes. We schedule between rough-in and drywall.
