Frequently Asked Questions
Spray Foam Insulation Questions
What type of insulation is best for a house in Florida?
It depends on where the air handler and ducts are. With equipment in the attic, open-cell spray foam on the roof deck often makes the most difference. With the air handler indoors, sealing the ceiling and blowing cellulose or fiberglass to R-38 or more is usually the better value. Closed-cell suits metal buildings and tight spaces.
What is the cost of closed-cell spray foam insulation per square foot?
HomeGuide's 2026 guide lists closed-cell at $3.00 to $5.00 per square foot installed, compared with $1.50 to $3.50 for open-cell. The thickness on your quote drives the final number.
Who manufactures spray foam insulation?
Several chemical companies make two-part open-cell and closed-cell systems. We name the product on your quote and can share its data sheet with the R-value per inch and barrier requirements.
What is the average cost to insulate a 2,000 square foot house?
HomeGuide's whole-house spray foam range is $8,000 to $20,000, and Fixr's is $10,000 to $30,000. A 2,000 square foot house has more than 2,000 square feet of roof and wall surface, so the total depends on what gets insulated. Doing only the attic with blown-in costs far less.
What attic insulation does Florida code require?
The 2023 Florida Building Code, Energy Conservation, lists R-38 for ceilings in Climate Zone 2, which includes Palm Beach County. ENERGY STAR recommends R-49 for an uninsulated Zone 2 attic.
Does FPL offer a rebate for attic insulation?
FPL lists an instant $220 ceiling insulation rebate when existing insulation is below R-8 and the installer is an FPL-approved participating contractor. Check eligibility with FPL.
How long do we have to stay out after spray foam?
HomeGuide advises at least 24 hours while the foam cures. We ventilate the area and give you a time to return.
Spray Foam Insulation Questions
Is spray foam good for Florida homes?
Where the air handler and ducts are in the attic, foam on the roof deck often helps a lot. Where they are not, a sealed ceiling with blown-in may be the better buy.
Does spray foam help with humidity?
It cuts the humid outdoor and attic air that leaks into the house, which lowers the moisture load on the AC.
Does open-cell foam on the roof deck hide leaks?
It can slow how fast a leak shows inside, which is why we check the roof first. Open-cell lets moisture pass, so leaks usually show as damp spots on the foam.
How thick should roof deck foam be?
At HomeGuide's R-3.5 to R-3.7 per inch, about 5.5 inches of open-cell reaches roughly R-20. The quote lists the inches for each area.
Roof Deck Foam for Sealed Attics Questions
Is a sealed attic good in Florida's humidity?
Yes, when done right: dry roof deck, enough foam and vents properly closed. It keeps humid outdoor air out of the attic where the ducts are.
Should I foam my attic when I reroof?
Reroofing is a great time, because the new deck is clean and dry. Talk to us about timing.
Will a sealed attic void my roof warranty?
Some roofing manufacturers have published positions on foam under roof decks. Check your roofing paperwork first.
How long does it take?
Usually one to two days of spraying, plus curing time.
Attic Air Sealing & Blown-In Insulation Questions
How much insulation should my attic have in Palm Beach County?
Florida's code lists R-38 for Zone 2 ceilings; ENERGY STAR recommends R-49 starting from an uninsulated attic.
Is blown-in worth it if my air handler is in the attic?
It still helps, and costs less than roof deck foam. If the ducts are long and leaky, a sealed attic may help more.
Can you add insulation over what's there?
Yes, if it is dry and clean.
Do I qualify for FPL's rebate?
FPL's program requires existing insulation below R-8 and an FPL-approved contractor. Check with FPL.
Garage & Metal Building Insulation Questions
Why is the room over my garage so hot?
Heat from the garage rises through the ceiling and gaps around pipes and ducts. Closed-cell foam under the floor helps.
Can you insulate a warehouse roof?
Yes, closed-cell on the underside of the steel roof and walls.
Is spray foam safe in a horse barn?
Once cured, yes. Animals need to be out during spraying and curing.
Do I need drywall over foam in my garage?
In occupied or attached spaces the code usually requires a thermal barrier. We note it on the quote.
Wall Insulation for Remodels & Additions Questions
Can you spray foam inside existing closed walls?
Standard spray foam needs open cavities. For closed walls, injection foam or dense-pack are options, but in block homes the options are limited.
How do you insulate concrete block walls?
When drywall is off, closed-cell foam in the furring space bonds to the block and adds R-value.
What R-value do walls need in Palm Beach County?
Florida's 2023 code lists R-13 for frame walls and R-6 or R-4 continuous for mass walls in Zone 2.
Do you work with remodel contractors?
Yes. We schedule between rough-in and drywall.
Insulation Removal & Replacement Questions
How do I know if storm damage reached my insulation?
Ceiling stains, a musty smell or matted insulation near roof repairs are signs. We can check.
Do I need new insulation after roof rats?
Usually, once the rats are gone and entry points are sealed.
Is removal messy?
The material leaves through a hose, and we cover the route.
Can I put new insulation over old?
Only if the old material is dry and clean.
